About the program

The Start-Up Visa (SUV) Program is a Canadian immigration initiative designed to attract talented international entrepreneurs who want to build innovative, globally competitive businesses in Canada. It provides a pathway to permanent residence for founders who can create jobs for Canadians and contribute to the country's economic growth.

The program is ideal for entrepreneurs with tech-based startups who are ready to scale, relocate to Canada, and become an active part of the Canadian innovation ecosystem. Genesis is one of only 10 designated Priority Entities authorized to issue Letters of Support each year, offering faster processing and deeper support.

Program Overview

Intake: Application & Shortlist Interviews

This initial phase allows us to get to know your team and the potential of your startup. There are no fees required for this stage.

Step 1: Online Application

Begin your journey by completing our intake form on the Genesis website. This is a no-fee application.

Step 2: Application Review

Our SUV team will carefully review your application. We will contact you regarding the status of your application within 10 business days of submission.

Step 3: Shortlist Interview

If your application meets our core criteria, we will invite your team to a 30-minute virtual shortlist interview.

What to expect:

This is a conversational meeting with your full founding team (all members to be listed on the Commitment Certificate). We will discuss your business vision, get to know your team, and provide a high-level overview of the IRCC requirements and our program process.

Phase 1: The 6-Week Due Diligence Cohort

Successful teams from the interview stage will be invited to our exclusive cohort, which serves as the formal due diligence process for entry into the Genesis SUV Program.

Program Structure

The cohort combines personalized, one-on-one weekly coaching sessions for your company with valuable group information sessions delivered by key partners from our innovation ecosystem.Over the first five weeks, we will work with you to develop a robust plan for your Canadian launch, covering critical areas such as:

  • Team
  • Canadian Market Viability and Impact
  • Intellectual Property (IP)
  • Immigration & Legal
  • Business Structure Financials

Final Presentation (Week 6)

The cohort concludes with a formal presentation where your team will present a solid market entry strategy to expand your business in North America.

Phase 2: Letter of Support, Genesis SUV Supports

Following the final presentations from the Diligence Cohort, the Genesis SUV Team will invite a limited number of startups to receive a Letter of Support (LOS) and join the Genesis SUV Program.

Please note: Participation in the diligence cohort does not guarantee a Letter of Support. The number of startups invited is dependent on the availability of seats Genesis has at the time of the cohort.

Program Fees

Full Genesis SUV Program payment of $50,000 CAD is required upfront. This fee will be broken into two payments.

SUV Letter of Support & Genesis SUV Support (Prior to Relocation)

With your LOS, you must submit your application for the Startup Visa and your associated Work Permits directly to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). We expect founders to complete these applications promptly to ensure a timely relocation process.

During this period, you will gain access to the Genesis SUV Program benefits, including:

Phase 3: Relocation and Genesis Membership

Upon landing in St. John's, NL, Canada your startup will officially begin its 12 month Genesis Membership

Program Basics

What is the Startup Visa (SUV) program?

The Startup Visa (SUV) program is a Canadian immigration pathway targeting immigrant entrepreneurs. It is designed for those who can build innovative businesses in Canada that can create jobs for Canadians and compete on a global scale, ultimately providing a path to permanent residence.

What is a Priority Incubator?

A priority incubator is a designated business incubator whose applications receive priority processing by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This means applications supported by organizations like Genesis are handled more quickly, helping entrepreneurs move to Canada and launch their businesses faster.

Is it required to establish the startup in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Yes. Companies applying through Genesis for the Startup Visa program must establish and actively operate their business in Newfoundland and Labrador. Applicants are required to relocate to the province, set up their headquarters here, and manage the business on-site to ensure it contributes to local economic development.

Eligibility & Application

Who is eligible to apply?

The program is open to eligible entrepreneurs from any country, provided they meet all requirements of both Genesis and IRCC. Genesis will only consider applications from eligible technology companies. There are no nationality-based exclusions for the SUV program.

I am already in Canada. What are the immigration status requirements?

If you are applying from within Canada, you must be legally entitled to be in the country throughout our selection process.

Why is this important? Maintaining legal status is a key requirement of Canadian immigration law. Being "out of status" (e.g., overstaying a visa) can make you inadmissible to Canada and will likely lead to IRCC refusing your application.

Our Policy: Due to these strict regulations, you must resolve any status issues with IRCC before applying to the Genesis SUV Program.

We are a team of founders. How should we apply?

You and your co-founders must apply together as a team. The Startup Visa program allows up to five founders per business, provided each applicant meets these key conditions:

• Each founder holds at least 10% of the voting rights in the company.

• Collectively, the founders and the designated organization (Genesis) own more than 50% of the company’s voting rights.

My startup is headquartered outside of Canada. Can I apply by registering a subsidiary?

​​No. In order to be accepted in the Startup Visa Program, the startup and headquartered in Canada.

How can I apply?

Interested candidates must apply for the Genesis SUV program directly through the Genesis website. There, you will find a detailed checklist of required documents and program fee information. Please note that all applications are subject to an initial review period.

Can I apply through an immigration consultant or lawyer?

No. Candidates can only apply for our SUV program directly through Genesis.

Is there a deadline to apply?

We have a rolling application process with two main intakes each year: Fall and Winter.

Rolling Intakes: Applications are reviewed as they are received.
Next Cohort Consideration: If you apply after a cohort has started, your application will automatically be considered for the next intake.
Waitlist: We may use a waitlist if cohorts are full or all Letters of Support for the year have been allocated.

Timelines & Fees

What is the timeframe for my application?

We are committed to a transparent review process. After you submit your application, here is what you can expect:

1. Comprehensive Review: We will conduct a thorough review of your application.

2. Status Notification for All Applicants: We will notify every applicant of their status via email within three weeks of the submission deadline.

3. Application Outcome: The email will either be an invitation to schedule an interview (if shortlisted) or a notification that you were not selected to move forward for the current cohort.

How much is the cost of the application?

The program fees are structured in phases and are per company:

Initial Application: $0
Phase 1 (Diligence Cohort): $5,000
Phase 2 (SUV Program Selection): $50,000

These fees are separate from IRCC government fees, police clearance certificates, medical exams, and other third-party expenses.

Are any of the payments refundable?

SUV Program fees are non-refundable. In the event the startup withdraws from the SUV program or discontinues participation in Genesis's services, no refunds will be issued, regardless of the stage of services rendered.

Will Genesis provide funding for my startup?

Startups selected for Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Genesis SUV process will have access to the SUV Expert Fund and may be approved for a specific funding amount. Genesis does not provide any independent funding for operational or scaling purposes beyond this.

Once You Have Been Selected

What do I need to do after being selected for a Letter of Support?

Once you have been selected to receive a Letter of Support, you must:

1. Submit final payment to Genesis.

2. Prepare and submit your applications for both a temporary work permit and permanent residence to IRCC.

3. Prepare to immigrate to Canada and operate your business from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Will having a Letter of Support guarantee my approval for the startup visa?

No. Genesis provides business development services in connection with the SUV program but does not guarantee any specific outcome in the immigration process. Approval of permanent residency or work permits is at the discretion of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and is subject to their evaluation of the startup’s eligibility.

Are work permits optional?

You do not need a work permit for the initial virtual programming, however all individuals on the Letter of Support considered essential will require a work permit to conduct business operations in Canada.

While waiting for the startup visa, can I remain in my country?

No. Once a company successfully completes the Genesis SUV Program and receives a Letter of Support, essential founders must apply for a temporary work permit and immigrate to Newfoundland and Labrador to work on their startup with Genesis through our 12-month membership program.

Is there an expiry date for my Letter of Support?

Yes. Your Letter of Support is valid for six months from the date it is issued. You must submit your complete permanent residence application to IRCC before this letter expires.

Will Genesis help me in incorporating my startup in Canada?

Genesis provides expert mentorship and guidance on the incorporation process. However, you are responsible for completing and submitting the necessary paperwork yourself. We will support and advise you as needed.
