Summer Cohort Ends with a Bang
The Summer 2016 Genesis Evolution Cohort ended with a bang last Thursday evening at the Fifth Ticket in downtown St. John’s. Ten of the best and brightest entrepreneurs from the cohort pitched their business idea to over 100 attendees in the overflowing venue filled with innovators from both the public and private sectors. Not only was the restaurant overflowing with attentive viewers, the event was also broadcast live via Facebook Live, reaching over 2200 people from all over the world (even as far as Nairobi!).
This event, the first to be broadcasted live online, marked the 7th Pitch & Pick event hosted by the Genesis Centre, and it also had the largest turnout of a Pitch & Pick in the history of the Genesis Evolution program (so far).
As always at Pitch & Pick events, the audience watched the pitches and voted for their favourite pitch to pick the winners of the evening. However, at this event there was a twist. Rather than a simple pen and paper ballot, the event utilized an online voting platform called Slido to allow viewers at the event to vote easily from their smartphones. This allowed those tuning in live via Facebook to vote for their favourites as well.
Finalists received cash prizes thanks to Build Ventures. After nearly 90 votes were cast via Slido, the winners were determined. In third place came Amy Fisher with Fog Water, a startup aiming to harvest Newfoundland’s vast amounts of natural fog banks. Second place belonged to Peter Francis’ HelpMeOrder, a food rating application specific to dishes at restaurants, which is already available on both Google and Apple app stores. Finally, in first place, taking home the $500 grand prize, was Amir Tavifi with Chliks, an online photo contest creation website where companies and individuals can interact, and individuals can win big.
And just like that, the Summer 2016 Pitch & Pick event drew to a close. The Genesis Centre would like to extend a huge thank you to the Fifth Ticket for providing excellent drinks, amazing food, and an inviting atmosphere to all participants and guests. And of course, a huge thank you is extended to all the attendees and viewers of Pitch & Pick.
Genesis is excited for the next cohort of the Evolution program, which will ultimately end in another Pitch & Pick event just like this, only bigger and better! Applications for the upcoming cohort have been extended to Friday September 16, so apply today to be a part of the next Pitch & Pick!
