MPs Seamus O'Regan and Nick Whalen visit Genesis for Facebook Roundtable
On August 15, 2016, Newfoundland and Labrador Members of Parliament Seamus O'Regan and Nick Whalen, along with Kevin Chan, Head of Public Policy for Facebook Canada, attended an innovation roundtable in the Genesis large boardroom. The entire event was live streamed via Facebook Live and Mr. O'Regan's Facebook page, allowing over 1800 viewers to tune in live and listen along as the attendees discussed innovation and entrepreneurship in our province for over an hour and 20 minutes.
The roundtable included an eclectic mix of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Newfoundland and Labrador. Memorial University of Newfoundland's President Gary Kachonoski was in attendance, along with the CEO of Genesis, Michelle Simms. Many entrepreneurs in the ecosystem also gave their insights into the state of innovation in our community, including the CEOs of four Genesis portfolio companies; Wally Haas of Avalon Holographics, Tim Howard of VISH Salon Tech, Stephen Finn of Nocland, and Joe Teo of HeyOrca.
In addition, the MUN Centre for Entrepreneurship, MUN Centre for Social Enterprise, Propel ICT, and NATI also had representation around the table, showcasing entrepreneurial knowledge from a variety of stakeholders in the local ecosystem. Discussions ran deep regarding the importance of industry clusters in relation to geographic markets, as well as a discussion on the role of government with regards to delivering services more efficiently. It was an exercise that proved both insightful and beneficial for the government of Canada, as it undertakes a new innovation strategy.
Such roundtable discussions is part of a series of roundtables across the country, as the federal government continues its ongoing engagement with the startup community in the province. All in all, the roundtable was seen as a success by the Genesis Centre, the attendants, and the Facebook commentators. You can watch the entire live stream embedded below!
