On July 5, 2016, the Honourable Navdeep Singh Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development (ISED), visited the Genesis incubator as part of a trip to the Atlantic Provinces to announce government funding in many different companies and industries. Along with Minister Bains, two Newfoundland MPs attended the visit, the Hon. Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and MP Nick Whalen. Government of Canada representation was at a high, with representation from ACOA also in attendance.
The visit began with the Minister Bains meeting Memorial University’s Enactus team. The team launches and maintains socially entrepreneurial ventures within the province, including the wildly successful SucSeed program which provides home-grown vegetables to Labradorians through a hydroponic system. Enactus Memorial recently won the national university Enactus pitch competition, and they will represent Canada at the world Enactus championships in Toronto this fall.
Following this meeting, the Ministers, along with an entire entourage of other distinguished guests, assistants, and photographers, took a brief tour of the Genesis facility, listening to short pitches from each of our portfolio companies. Our companies debuted renderings of their future products, fully developed work stations, and beta-testing websites to the group of eager listeners. The portfolio companies that pitched to the group were HeyOrca, Empowered Homes, Avalon Holographics, Nocland, and Vish Salon Tech.
The visit culminated with a roundtable discussion that took place in the large boardroom of Genesis, in which discussions on the current landscape of the Newfoundland and Labrador startup and funding ecosystems were had. Several high profile NL entrepreneurs attended the event along with the government officials, including founders of two Genesis graduate companies, Neil Chaulk of Solace Power and Jamie King of Verafin.
Genesis would like to extend a sincere thank you to Minister Bains, Minister Foote, and MP Whalen for their time and valuable input. Thank you as well to the Government of Canada as a whole, in particular ACOA, for making this entire visit possible. We here at Genesis hope you come back to visit soon!
